Tindy C – Leicester Belgrave Mela – 11 Jul 11
SPECIAL EVENT- LEICSETER BELGRAVE MELA –
11TH JULY 2011, RADIO FOX
This year, Fox decided to cover the 25th anniversary of Leicester Belgrave Mela. The Mela celebrates the culture of the South Asian Communities in Leicester, as there’s high percentage of such communities living in Leicester.
This was a one-off programme, covered by Tindy C who looked at various things at the Mela: The Mela Bazaar (lots of food, fashion, jewelry & artwork); Stage 25 (local performers showcasing their talent) & the Entertainment stage (bollywood & belly dancing, bhangra & beatboxing).
Tindy C (Desi Girl*) caught up with a few of the performers; some of the stall holders; random people enjoying their day and even spoke to the British Heart Foundation.
We were trying to capture what the Mela encompasses and what a rich heritage Leicester has; and the fact that you don’t have to be Asian to enjoy the mela! We tried to bring the busy ‘hustle and bustle’ of the mela to patients bedsides. We had positive feedback from our audience.
*‘Desi’ usually means anyone who is from the Indian subcontinent – but doesn’t live there.
